I think my child is being bullied, but I’m not sure. What is bullying? Do schools have an obligation to stop or prevent it?

Bullying is an act or multiple actions that hurts a student by creating an intimidating, threatening, or abusive environment that disrupts their time at school. When a student is experiencing bullying, there may be only one other person engaged in the bullying behavior, or it can involve multiple students.

Every school district is required by state law to have a policy which prohibits bullying and harassment. That policy must include options and methods for preventing bullying and harassment and for intervening when it occurs. Schools have an obligation to investigate reports of bullying. If an investigation shows that bullying occurred or is ongoing, the school has an obligation to get involved and to stop the bullying behavior.
