I disagree with my child’s punishment. I think the punishment is too harsh or I don’t think that my child did what the school says. What can I do?

You may be able to appeal the disciplinary decision, but it depends. Only some disciplinary decisions can be appealed. Read the code of conduct for your district to find out which disciplinary decisions can be appealed in your district. If the decision cannot be appealed, you can file a grievance under FNG (LOCAL), which is a board policy that is available on your school district’s board policy website. Read about the grievance process here

Your child’s principal may ask you to sign paperwork that says that you consent to your child’s punishment. Note that if you disagree with your child’s punishment, you should not sign paperwork consenting to the punishment. If you plan to appeal or file a grievance, you should not sign this paperwork. Closely read any paperwork the school asks you to sign related to your child’s discipline. Your child’s principal may be very pushy with this paperwork. You still should not sign anything saying that you consent to the punishment if you plan to appeal or file a grievance.
